TCP/IP protocols and IP addresses

NOAH 3 uses TCP/IP to communicate in a network setting. In most cases when networks are up and functioning, TCP/IP is set up correctly for NOAH. On occasion it may be necessary to check and/or change your TCP/IP settings, as follows:

Configuring the TCP/IP protocol

  1. Determine which computer will be your Server. Record the operating system of each PC. Ideally, you will have a dedicated Server for your NOAH 3 installation. If you have a small network, you can have a Server and Client installation on the same computer.

NOTE: HIMSA does not recommend Windows 98 or ME as the NOAH Server.

  1. Determine whether each PC in the network has the TCP/IP protocol installed. Install this protocol, if necessary.
    • In Windows Explorer, right-click on Network Neighborhood (or My Network Places). Select Properties.
      • Win 98: Open the Configuration tab.
      • Win 2000/XP Pro: Right-click Local Area Connection and select Properties. Open the General tab.

  • Search through the installed network components for TCP/IP with a network adapter. TCP/IP with Dial Up Adapter may be listed - this is for your modem and is NOT the protocol you require. If the protocol is not installed, install as follows:
    • Win 98: Click Add in the Configuration tab. Select Protocol and Add from the list of components. Select Microsoft from the Manufacturer list and TCP/IP from the Protocol list. Click OK.
    • Win 2000/XP Pro: Click Install in the General tab. Select Protocol. Click Add. Select Microsoft TCP/IP. Click OK.

Verifying IP addresses

  1. Verify routable IP addresses for each computer in your network.
    • In Windows Explorer, click Start > Run. Type command (for Win 95/98/ME) or cmd (for Win 2000/XP Pro). Click OK. A DOS command prompt opens.
    • At the prompt, type ipconfig and press Enter.
    • Several lines appear with IP Configuration information. Check whether a number is assigned as the IP address.

  1. Determine whether the IP address exists and is correct.
  • No number is assigned and you have verified the TCP/IP protocol is installed (step 2).
    • Assign an IP address. See next section - Assigning IP addresses.
  • The number falls within the range 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.255.
    • This computer is using a routable IP address. Check the rest of the computers in the network. Then install NOAH System 3.
  • The number is of the form 169.254.x.x.
    • This number indicates a Windows Private Networking Scheme included with Windows. These numbers are NOT routable and will NOT allow you to network NOAH System 3. Assign a new IP address. See next section - Assigning IP Addresses.
  • The number is not in the routable range recommended by HIMSA or in the Windows Private Network range.
    • Contact your network administrator who can verify if your IP scheme is routable. OR, attempt to install NOAH System 3 and, in that way, check whether your IP scheme is routable.

Assigning IP addresses

  1. Assign an IP address within the range 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254.
    • Close the DOS screen.
    • In Windows Explorer, right-click on Network Neighborhood and select Properties.
      • Win 98: Open the Configuration tab. Select TCP/IP with the network adapter from the list. Click Properties. Open the IP Address tab.
      • Win 2000/XP Pro: Right-click Local Area Connection. Select Properties. Select Internet Protocol TCP/IP from the list. Click Properties. Open the General tab.
    • Check Specify an IP address (or Use the following IP address).

  • At IP address, enter a number within the range 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254. Ensure the Subnet Mask is 255.255.255.0. Remember the number you enter as you will require a new number for each computer.
  • Click OK. Click OK again, then Close.
  • You will need to reboot your PC. Then re-run the ipconfig utility (step 3) to verify that your PC now has an IP address and that it is in the routable range recommended by HIMSA.
