How to avoid the IDispatch 1091 Error

This procedure helps to ensure a smoother upgrade from NOAH System 3.5.2 to version 3.6.1 for end user sites NOT using eTONA.

Warning: If your installation uses eTONA, there is no reason to follow the below directions.  Doing so will result in eTONA data loss.

HIMSA has recently noticed that some NOAH System 3.6.1 upgrades from version 3.5.2 have failed due to an SQL installation issue.  The reason for the problem is that NOAH 3.5.2 uses a SQL 2000 (MSDE) database that may not get properly installed.  As the adoption rate of eTONA has been slow, many locations are unaware that the eTONA database was not properly installed.

If the SQL database used in 3.5.2 is not installed correctly there is a very good chance that the NOAH 3.6.1 installation will finish but NOAH will not launch.  Instead of starting you receive the error message:

The office server could no initialize or set the current user/client Error code: 80040643 Error Description: IDispatch error #1091

NOTE: If you have already installed 3.6.1 and are receiving this error message on your computer then please click on the IDispatch issue link under Related Links.

To prevent the chance of a failed Microsoft SQL 2005 Express installation you can take the preventative step of removing the MSDE database before upgrading to NOAH 3.6.1.

The following steps only need to be run on Non-Networked and Server installations of NOAH.

  1. Go to add remove programs and remove the Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine(HIMSA) entry.  Please see the picture below.

  2. Run the NOAH System 3.6.1 installation to upgrade to 3.6.1.
