Using the Event Viewer to troubleshoot firewall issues

Description

Firewalls, such as Windows firewall installed with SP2 or third party products like Norton's Worm Protection or the MacAfee Personal Firewall, can block the DCOM protocol that NOAH uses to communicate over the network. In this case, the following error message appears:

The office server cannot set or initialize current user/client.

Solution

A quick way to confirm that a firewall is blocking network communication is to check Event Viewer on the PC. To find this, click on Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > System. The Event Viewer includes time stamped entries for information, warnings and errors. Look for any errors that have DCOM as the source. If you find a DCOM error for the time you are trying to launch NOAH, right-click on the error and choose Properties. Below is a sample DCOM error that indicates a firewall issue. Getting this information, or discovering a lack of DCOM errors, will point you in the right direction for solving the "Office server cannot set or initialize …" network error.
