Problem: Using Windows Restore Point when restoring NOAH System to a point before a 3.6.1 upgrade makes NOAH unstable

Description

Using Windows Restore Point in order to restore NOAH System to a point before a NOAH System 3.6.1 upgrade causes NOAH System to become unusable.

HIMSA has ascertained that this problem is caused by a Microsoft bug during upgrade of the MSDE database used by NOAH System 3.5.2. During the NOAH System 3.6.1 installation the current MSDE instance is upgraded to a 2005 Express database. This process involves the deletion of certain SQL files by the Microsoft upgrade installation program - these files are not recoverable when NOAH is later re-installed.

Solution

To avoid this problem, please do not use Windows Restore Point.

If this problem has already occurred, please follow the steps below.

IMPORTANT:

  • The SR_Recover.exe application must ONLY be executed on a system with a NOAH System 3.5.2 installation.
  • ONLY qualified persons who assist in the recover process should use this application and the generated script files.

  1. Open Add/Remove programs and uninstall the HIMSA database instance - Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (HIMSA).

  2. The following error message may appear during uninstallation - click OK.

  3. Run Setup.exe for NOAH System 3.5.2. When the CD Browser menu appears select the NOAH installation of your choice.
  4. Reboot if required.
  5. For Server/Client installations only:
    • If you have already installed the Server, then install the Client via Setup.exe - select the Client option in the CD Browser.
    • Reboot if required.
  6. Copy the SR_Recover zip file in the table below to your computer desktop. Unzip the file.
  7. Open the SR_Recover directory and run SR_Recover.exe. A dos window appears. Press the Enter key to complete the initial part of the program.

  8. Two files are created - Restore_eTONA_353_DB.bat and Restore_eTONA_352_DB.sql.

  9. Run the Restore_eTONA_352_DB.bat file. The following screen appears.

  10. Press either the Enter key or the spacebar. Both of the Restore_eTONA_352_DB.bat and Restore_eTONA_352_DB.sql files are deleted.
  11. Delete the SR_Recover.exe file from the desktop. Also delete its directory at C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\SR_Recover.

IMPORTANT:  If the SR_Recover.exe is not deleted and the end-user is an eTONA user their database will be deleted if they rerun this in future.

  12. Reboot your system. NOAH System 3.5.2 should be working as expected.
