User Story: Colita MacTavish is on a mission

The mission is clear:

The Northern Health Region is dedicated to providing quality, accessible, compassionate health services for all.

However, when you work as an audiologist in Manitoba’s largest region, fulfilling this mission can be a bit of a challenge. Just ask Colita MacTavish.



The Northern Health Region is the largest of Manitoba’s five regions, yet only accounts for 6 percent of the population. This means that Colita must often travel to remote communities to provide her patients with quality local hearing care services.


“I work primarily pediatric practice,” said Colita. “We test in several schools following school hearing screening failures. The schools are both in town and up to 350 km (220 miles) away. We see up to 50 children in a school day, plus more in the evening. We also have a newborn hearing screening program, which is not yet the standard in the rest of Manitoba.”

With all this work to do, Colita is always on the lookout for tools to help her organize and simplify her daily routines.

No Novice to Noah

Colita has been in practice over 15 years, and she has been using Noah software as long as she can remember.

Colita has grown to appreciate Noah features such as the Journal Module, and how easy it is to switch Noah servers and take patient records on the road.

However, her clear favorite Noah feature has got to be Categories.

Getting organized with Categories

Since upgrading to Noah 4.4, Colita and her colleagues have been “going crazy” assigning categories to each child.

“I have been enjoying the categories feature a lot!!,” exclaimed Colita. “It has allowed us to eliminate a database of the children we see annually.”


With tools like categories, Colita and her colleagues can track all of their clients. They note which ones need to be seen annually or are discharged; sort children by community; keep track of who wears hearing aids or FM systems; who the hearing aid dispenser is; and keep track of clients with family history.

“For example, we sort children by community when we travel to other communities,” explains Colita. “We export all our audios from the network server to the local server. This essentially allows us to bring all our files with us without carrying a single paper file. We can designate which school a child is in and sort our schedule based on that.”

The more integration the better

Another key Noah feature for Colita is the ability to integrate and share data from all her measurement equipment.

“I have appreciated it more lately with the integration of my Verifit and pc-based audiometer,” said Colita. “I have been able to network all three systems so that I`m able to do testing on the audiometer, pick up the information in Noah on another computer and transfer it to the Verifit, do the real ear testing, then transfer it back to the middle computer and set hearing aids.”

By using these Noah tools to organize and integrate her daily tasks, Colita can spend more time on the work that really matters:
